5.4.8 Forno d’Oro

Rua Artilharia 1 16b

Location HERE.

Closed Sundays, and Monday lunchtime.

A pizza restaurant away from the old downtown, not quite up at Amoreiras, close but not so close to Rato, and a trek uphill from Marquês de Pombal? Why include it and, indeed, recommend it? Quite simply, because it’s worth it. Forno d’Oro is one of Europe’s ten highest-rated pizzerias.

The bonus is that it’s not so expensive, either, although if you have a couple of beers, or glasses of wine, that will make the bill that bit larger.

Whole olives. Anchovies, too

From the discreet street-level entrance (CAUTION three steps up into the restaurant), you enter a space with an understated white decor, and if your group is more than two people, you’ll have already made a reservation. If not, you might get lucky, but more often, you’ll have to wait.

What makes this restaurant that bit more special? Have a look at the menu (HERE).

Added to the offering is the service. Which is very good indeed. You’ll be offered antipasti, like Bruschetta with tomatoes, and it will be explained that this will be added to your bill. Most diners say yes, usually to the Bruschetta, which is highly enjoyable.

The pizza is also highly enjoyable, and there are those little details you might not expect, like being given a small dish for olive stones. Many pizzerias use sliced olives; not this one. Those black olives are whole, and very tasty.

Most punters choose wine to accompany their pizza, but there are also recommended craft beer pairings. Mine was Sovina Amber, although I tried the same brewer’s stout later on, and thought it a better match.

After all that, you will know why Forno d’Oro was reviewed and, indeed, recommended.

Buses 702, 711, 723, 748, 753 and 783 on Rua Joaquim António de Aguiar best bet, or buses 720, 727 and 738 on Rua Braamcamp, although this means an uphill walk.

Metro Rato (an uphill walk) or Marquês de Pombal (a longer uphill walk).
