GLÓRIA FUNICULAR

So Carris have made their statement on the future of the Glória funicular.

What visitors to the city will want to know is when it will be back, and the news is that it won’t reappear until 2029.

The new cars will be stronger than their predecessors, they’ll be all steel rather than wooden bodied, and nothing will move until the safety aspects have been sorted, and proven to be sorted.

No news about the Bica and Lavra funiculars, or the Santa Justa lift. But the timescales for the other funiculars may be similar to that of the Glória.

Following all of that, we start, once more, with the alternatives to using funiculars.

Don’t slog up those hills just because the funiculars have been suspended.

Minibus 51E gives an alternative to the Santa Justa lift, and an alternative to the Glória funicular;

Bairrobus 19B gives an alternative to the Lavra funicular;

Bairrobus 22B gives an alternative to the Bica funicular.

TRAM NEWS

Carris are putting on a Desfile dos Classicos (tram parade) on Saturday the 19th of September. There may be some tickets left; this event does not feature any buses. See HERE for more details.

The 12 and 28 trams are turning back at Graça, and are substituted by buses between Graça and Martim Moniz, while works on Rua Forno do Tijolo are carried out. Timescale for completion of works, and resumption of normal tram service, is not yet known.

ORIENTE NEWS

Oriente accessibility is marginally better than last month, with one up escalator, and one down escalator, from street level to rail station concourse now working, both on the south side.

Sadly, both lifts from street level to station concourse level are broken, as are most of the lifts between station concourse level and station platforms.

METRO NEWS

Cais Sodré station (Linha Verde) has reopened, as completion of the new link between there and Rato moves closer.

At Praça de Espanha (Linha Azul), works and partial closures will continue until October, at which point the station should be properly accessible, with lifts.

AUGUST CLOSURES ENDING

Cafés and restaurants that took a holiday break in August should have already reopened, or will do so this week.

CRAFT BEER NEWS

There is a beer festival later this week (4th to 6th September) in Ericeira. Details HERE.
