Still no sign of the final report into the accident on the Elevador da Glória, and so we start, once more, with the alternatives to using funiculars.
Don’t slog up those hills just because the funiculars have been suspended.
Minibus 51E gives an alternative to the Santa Justa lift, and an alternative to the Glória funicular;
Bairrobus 19B gives an alternative to the Lavra funicular;
Bairrobus 22B gives an alternative to the Bica funicular.
MUSEUM NEWS
The Tile Museum remains closed. And it may be closed for some time. The scaffolding is still in place as of July 29, and no estimates have yet been given for its reopening.
METRO ACCESS NEWS
Two more stations, Martim Moniz and Intendente, both on the Linha Verde, have had lifts installed, and are therefore, at least nominally, accessible.
The lifts are at the north end of both stations. At Intendente, there is a north concourse, and the usual layout of platform to concourse, plus one concourse to surface, lift is used. At Martim Moniz, the lifts are on Rua da Palma, and partly because the station is not far below the roadway, they access the platforms directly. So there are barriers between lift door and platform.
HOWEVER The Metro remains infamous for broken lifts, broken escalators, broken travolators and the rest. If you really need level access, CHECK on their website (HERE) beforehand. Check “Estado das linhas e elevadores” to see the bad news.
The next Metro station to get lifts should be Praça de Espanha (Linha Azul). There will be closures of parts of that station between now and October while works are carried out. New Stations at Santos and Estrela, between Cais do Sodré and Rato on what will become the Linha Circular, will be accessible from the start.
Metropolitana de Lisboa claims that the “downtime” of lifts is decreasing, but the continuing breakages at central area stations such as Terreiro do Paço, Cais do Sodré, Baixa-Chiado and Rossio suggests the problem is far from solved.

The station at Cais do Sodré (Linha Verde) will be closed between the 8th and 26th August. This is due to installation of new signalling for the upcoming Linha Circular. Trains will terminate/originate at Baixa-Chiado.
It looks like all punters boarding or alighting from trains on the Linha de Cascais will have to pass through the barrier line between the ground level concourse and platforms. So the queues are likely to be longer, and slower to disperse. Get to the station in good time if you’re heading to the coast.
ORIENTE ACCESSIBILITY NEWS
Not good news from the main line station at Oriente.
From street level to station concourse level, both lifts (west and east side) are broken, as are both up escalators (north and south side). If you’re travelling with luggage, allow more time to lug it up the steps. If you need level access, forget boarding or alighting at Oriente, and maybe use Santa Apolónia instead.
AUGUST RESTAURANT AND BAR CLOSURES
Some restaurants and bars close for the holidays. Those that close from late July onwards are usually open again at the end of August. If you can, CHECK that your target outlet is open, and if that’s not possible, have an alternative ready, just in case.
CRAFT BEER NEWS
Two new and quite different beers have arrived at the tap in the past fortnight.
A collaboration between AMO, Rafeira and Pato, RAP UNCOMMON, is a 5% Rye California Common. Definitely available at AMO Brewery on Rua Bernardim Ribeiro, and definitely worth sampling.
Almirante Reis, an eastern European style pilsner at 5.3%, and brewed with Saaz hops, from Oitava Colina in collaboration with LisPoa, is available at Oitava Colina in Graça, and also at their brewery tap at Cabo Ruivo.
Sadly, Aguarela Bar and Kitchen has closed. Hopefully this will be only temporary.
