Down the hill to the east of Graça is this small neighbourhood tasca, where the keyword is simplicity. Nothing complicated, nothing fancy.


Their speciality is Caracóis (snails). There’s usually someone, maybe a couple, tucking into a plate of snails and washing it down with a beer or glass of wine. I passed on the caracóis and instead ordered a Prego no Pão with Batatas Fritas on the side.

A small container of home made hot sauce is brought out for the Prego, along with a warning to be careful with it. Heed this advice. Because it really is hot.

The steak in the Prego is good, and not overdone. The chips are made from real potatoes on the premises, and are not out of a bag. Also, there is no menu on display - you have to ask. So it helps to understand a little Português. They also do shrimps, prawns, or whatever you want to call them.

Not much choice for vegetarians, mind. But it’s a reflection of what the local community likes.

Also present, and in the category of once seen cannot be unseen, is a prominently displayed portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II (or Isabel Dois as they called her in Portugal).

The month has begun with more of that very warm weather; the mercury in Lisbon hit 40 degrees Celsius on the 3rd. There will be more days with temperatures in the mid-30s. So keep on keeping hydrated. Torre de Belém No more of those two-hour waits for a year or so. In fact, no waits at all, because the Torre de Belém has closed for renovations. It’s a very old structure, and the daily assault by tourists has meant push coming to shove. Padrão dos Descobrimentos , on the Belém waterfront, has reopened! Works on the “ water mirror ” fountain in Parque Recreativo Alto da Serafina have been completed, and the result is worth a visit on its own. The 770 bus from the north side of Sete Rios will take you there - an ideal place to chill for an hour or two, especially in the summer heat. Water Mirror at Alto da Serafina Next Sunday, May 18th, is International Museums Day, and Museu da Carris - the bus and tram museum - is offering free admission. Link HERE . For beer lovers, there is a craft beer festival on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th May, called Ponte & Pints, at Escala 25, below the Ponte 25 de Abril, on the north side of the Avenida da India, and close to the LX Factory. 14 craft brewers from across Portugal will be represented. In the grid pattern of streets north of the tram route, an area with a seriously high incidence of the Smart fortwo, is Lisbon’s smallest craft beer outlet. Less inside space than AMO, and indeed less inside space than the Pravda Craft Mission outlet in Marvila. Some tables outside. So what’s on offer? Five taps with a regularly changing offering, backed up by lots of bottles and cans. Always an IPA on the go. And what about food? Indeed, what about food. There is a pizza and calzone menu on offer, but it does not come from this bar. You place an order, it is phoned through, and then it is collected from a nearby restaurant and delivered to your table. The cost is added to your bill. Seems to work OK.
