7.2.24 June 2026
Still no sign of the final report into the accident on the Elevador da Glória, and so we start, once more, with the alternatives to using funiculars.
Don’t slog up those hills just because the funiculars have been suspended.
Minibus 51E gives an alternative to the Santa Justa lift, and an alternative to the Glória funicular;
Bairrobus 19B gives an alternative to the Lavra funicular;
Bairrobus 22B gives an alternative to the Bica funicular.
DAYS OFF NEWS
Strike (Greve Geral) today, June 3rd. Which you may already know.
Public holiday (Corpus Christi) tomorrow, June 4th. ALSO Public holiday (Portugal Day) next Wednesday, June 10th. Fewer buses and trams, the Metro on a weekend service, and some attractions may close. Some traditional restaurants may also close. CHECK to avoid disappointment.
Also, Lisbon has its own Public holiday on June 13th, which this year falls on a Saturday. There are associated events on the 12th, like parades, so surface transport may be, if only briefly, disrupted.

The Tile museum remains closed. HOWEVER
Torre de Belém has reopened!
HOWEVER 2 … there are now strict limits on how many punters are allowed inside the tower at any one time. Also, the nearby ticket office has, so far, remained closed, although the outlet opposite Mosteiro dos Jeronimos sells tickets for the tower. More on the best way to book your visit later.
TRAM NEWS
Carris is holding this year’s tram parade (Desfile dos Classicos) early, and it will happen next Saturday, June 6th. Some places on the historic trams and buses may still be available - link HERE. The parade will make two runs, starting from Estação Santo Amaro at 1030 and 1600 hours.
The parade route will revert to running from Santo Amaro to Praça da Figueira and back. If you get tickets, you must board your tram or bus at the Carris Santo Amaro site, checking in first. If in doubt, ASK one of the staff.

Tram 25 has at last reverted to its usual route via Largo Santos, Rua Boavista and Corpo Santo, following completion of surface work on the new Metro connection from Cais do Sodré to Rato. So the 25 no longer serves Cais do Sodré.
HOWEVER there have been the inevitable problems with car and van drivers not getting the message that the trams are back, and continuing to park over the tracks. So there may be diversions on those occasions. The situation is made worse by the route not operating at weekends or public holidays, when the 774 bus covers for it.
LISBON BOOK FAIR
The annual Book Fair has taken over most of Parque Eduardo VII, and runs through to June 14th. Worth a detour, just to appreciate that print media is still a thing in Portugal.
