TRAM NEWS

Tram 28 is back to its full route, and full schedule.

The advice is as before: don’t waste your time queuing at Martim Moniz. If you want to ride the 28, get on at Prazeres, at the other end of the line. Get up there on weekdays using Tram 25 from Praça da Figueira, Praça do Comércio, or Cais do Sodré. Or, every day of the week, bus 709 from Rossio.

One other warning: those trying to ride the 28 while carrying rucksacks or luggage - if at all possible, DON’T. It gets uncomfortable enough without the extras.

28 Trams (and a 25) at Prazeres

Tram 18 and 24 Reliability, or not.

The 18 is a route that Carris tried, and failed, to abandon some years back. There was even a proposal for a group of enthusiasts to take it over, which was most likely scuppered by the potential liability insurance premiums.

Also, the 18 has a relatively long run away from the rest of the network, all the way from Santo Amaro to Boa Hora and up to the Ajuda terminus, and without an intermediate turning loop. So road blockages - the usual stuff like badly parked cars and delivery vans - can make the service unreliable.

Jacarandas out this week - in Largo do Carmo ...

Added to this is the diversion of the 18 to Belém when there are obstructions mid-route, and without much notice. So please be forewarned.

Tram 24 should have three cars circulating, but on occasion, Carris try and make do with just two, meaning long gaps in the service. Recently, a substitute minibus was thrown into the mix.

Also, there is little room for waiting departure time at the Camões terminus, as it’s busy with 28s and 12s. So, even with three trams on duty, the only time point that can be reliably observed is that at the Campolide terminus.

... in Largo Vitorino Damásio ...

Graça Funicular

This is now operating longer hours. The service is now run by Carris (not the case when it first opened), and has been given route number 55E.

Timetable HERE.

Oriente Escalators

The south side up escalator from street level to station concourse level is once again borked. The north side one is still broken. Be warned if transiting Oriente with any kind of significant luggage - you have to rely on the east side lift, which, the last time I used it, was in a shaky state, but still working.

... and Avenida Dom Carlos I

Jacarandas

It’s jacaranda time! You can see the purple treetops all over the city, but especially at Largo do Carmo and Avenida Dom Carlos I. Get out there and get the photos, as the purple will soon be gone.
