THE USUAL REMINDER Don’t slog up those hills just because the funiculars have been suspended.

Minibus 51E gives an alternative to the Santa Justa lift, and an alternative to the Glória funicular;

Bairrobus 19B gives an alternative to the Lavra funicular;

Bairrobus 22B gives an alternative to the Bica funicular.

MUSEUM REMINDER 1 The Tile Museum is still closed for repairs. Expect re-opening around June.

MUSEUM REMINDER 2 The Gulbenkian Museum has been closed for repair work, but should re-open this week

BELÉM REMINDER Torre de Belém still closed for repairs. Re-opening date uncertain.

WEATHER NEWS The storms have, for the moment, passed. HOWEVER if you are travelling by train, some lines are still closed, if only partially. Latest news on the CP website HERE.

SAD NEWS Padaria Patriacal, the pastelaria with the Art Nouveau interior near Principe Real and Miradouro São Pedro Alcântara, has closed. It did re-open after New Year, but now the lights have gone out and the furniture has been taken away.

METRO NEWS Approval has been given for the Linha Vermelha to be extended from São Sebastião to Alcântara. So, in the coming months, that will mean work sites, traffic diversions, and the occasional cutting of tram routes. On the plus side, the works on the new stretch of line connecting Cais do Sodré to Rato via Santos and Estrela should wind down soon.

SUMMER TIME Clocks go forward in Portugal at the same time as the rest of Europe - last weekend in March, 28th to 29th.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos , on the Belém waterfront, has reopened! Works on the “ water mirror ” fountain in Parque Recreativo Alto da Serafina have been completed, and the result is worth a visit on its own. The 770 bus from the north side of Sete Rios will take you there - an ideal place to chill for an hour or two, especially in the summer heat. Trams - same as in June, the roadworks in Rua do Forno do Tijolo continue, so the 28 cannot run its usual route between Martim Moniz and Graça. But one big change - the viewing platform atop the Elevador de Santa Justa has reopened. A new and higher guardrail has been installed, but a maximum of just 20 people is allowed up there at one time. ALSO, it will cost you €5 per person to access. That’s in addition to all other transport costs. AND the payment can only be made by bank card. View from the top of the Elevador de Santa Justa Access to the viewing deck is via a spiral staircase, and not for the faint hearted. The staircase is on the same side of the lift as the cabin exit. When I visited, both lift cabins were operating, and the queue (line if you like) to go up was not so long. Maybe not for long.
