4.6.1 Oceanarium
Esplanada Dom Carlos I
Location HERE.
Open 7 days a week.

Not a museum, and the building is most certainly not a landmark. But it is an attraction for those interested in marine life and ecosystems, and especially for family groups. Because the kids will love it.
The downside is that it’s not cheap, especially if you have to pay out for one of those family groups. But if the weather isn’t good, this is a good way of spending a half day.

You may have to queue if you’re buying tickets on spec., but it won’t be for long - and, if it’s a bad weather day, there is shelter, as there is over the bridge that leads to the main event, on an island off the shore of Parque das Nações.
CAUTION Not for those who suffer from claustrophobia, or anyone who becomes disoriented by dark spaces.

PLUS POINT Watchwords you will see again and again are “conservation” and “sustainability”, which will have the “anti-Woke” brigade screaming blue murder and running in the direction of away. If you think there is any merit in spending evenings necking over-chilled commodity beer and gorging on junk food in locations like The Strip in Albufeira, you won’t like this place. Good.
There are outside spaces where you can get close up to the penguins, and one large central tank stocked with a host of different fishes, including sharks and rays. And smaller tanks, with descriptions of what they contain. But children will just be watching the fishes, transfixed by their movement and grace.

After spending an hour or two moving at a leisurely pace around the main building, it’s back over the connecting bridge and out - but you have to pass through the gift shop first. So be warned - the kids may well want souvenirs of their visit. Which will go on the final bill.
Metro and heavy rail services a short walk away at Gare Oriente; buses 26B, 705, 708, 725, 728, 744, 750, 759, 794 near Gare Oriente or from the adjacent bus station.
