6.2.29 Delirium Café Lisboa
Calçada Nova de São Francisco 2A
Location HERE.
The one place I put off revisiting because it was the only outlet in Lisbon that had given me a bad head after visiting it. But that was a few years ago, so once more into the breach, and all that.
Advertised on the flip side of the promo cards given out at Gulden Draak, so I assume there is some connection. Situated in Tourist Central, at the lower end of the Chiado district, it boasts 35 taps, although like Gulden Draak, they aren’t all on at once. And before getting in the front door, the first caution.
CAUTION beware the horror step outside the front door! Access is off a flight of steps, with the additional problem of an inclined front step. As in, inclined to up-end anyone emerging from the premises in a less than totally alert state. Not so good when you’re dispensing a range of high octane beers.
Also, there are more steps to ascend before reaching the bar itself. Plenty of seating, including, for those lucky ones who find one free, a number of balconies overlooking Rua Nova do Almada, so you can people watch, and traffic snarl watch too, as locals, taxis, TVDEs and TukTuks pass by slowly, or, more usually, very slowly. If all else fails, you can sit up to the bar. Best approached from Rua Ivens, to limit the climbing involved to a minimum.
Mainly Belgian beers on offer, plus a few from Germany, and as with Gulden Draak, Portuguese beers like Urraca IPA from Oitava Colina. Belgian beer means Correct Glasses, too. Food includes a list of burgers, boards, stuff to share, and specials that include Cod’n’Chips, and their own Francesinha. I can confirm that the chips are the same shape as those at Gulden Draak.
Those who cannot face strong Belgian beer will be relieved that the tap offerings also include Pilsner Urquell and Guinness - both offered in 50cl measures only. The Paulaner Helles is offered in 50cl and 1 litre measures.
The size of the bar area may not be apparent at first, until you need to use the toilets, which can be a long trek, and reveals that, Wayne’s World alert, they have a pool table! Which brings us to a conclusion.
It’s not for the kind of crowd that frequents the Dois Corvos outlets, and maybe even Canil. Definitely not for those who stand and chat outside AMO. But it is consistently busy, so must be doing something right.
Metro Baixa-Chiado. Buses - 758 and 22B at Camões. Tram 28.

One small step for the mellow and unwary ...
