5 Eating

What you will find here: inexpensive food outlets, mainly restaurants, mostly in Lisbon’s downtown.

What you won’t find here: expensive and exclusive food outlets. That’s just me - I can’t see the point in going there.

Some craft beer outlets do a good range of food too - those that do are pointed up in their entry.

None of this is hearsay: it only goes in the guide if I’ve eaten there.

Two things you need to bear in mind:

TIPPING

Portugal is nowhere near places like the USA, where, if you don’t pony up at least 20% on top of the nominal total payable, you’ll get a look like the proverbial smacked arse, or like you just took a crap on their nice clean floor.

But some establishments are getting a little more upfront about such details.

My own preference is to pay using a card, then tip in cash. Amounts tend to be in the 10% region. Restaurants might deserve it; bars may do too, but I’m not convinced that anywhere you have to collect from the counter (“Serviço ao balcão”) deserves extra. You choose. Don’t let anyone pressure you.

REVIEWS

In the course of compiling this guide, I have read far too many bad faith reviews: those who may have had a less than wonderful experience, those who could not resist the temptation to exaggerate or even flat-out lie, and those who didn’t go there, but saw an opportunity to put the boot in.

Before you post one of those, THINK.

Everyone who serves you, at restaurants, cafés, bars and elsewhere, needs to make a living. Many Portuguese suffer the country’s curse of less than bountiful wages. All of them want to make your experience a good one.

So think twice before putting the boot in. PLEASE.
