4.5.9 MAAT
Avenida da Brasília
Location HERE.
Closed Tuesdays.
The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, known simply as MAAT, comprises the long-disused Tejo Power Station, and a new building designed by British architect Amanda Levete.
This complex gets around the problem faced by all attractions on the Belém waterfront - the barrier of the Avenida da Índia, the Cais do Sodré to Cascais rail line, and the Avenida da Brasília - by having a footbridge which not only crosses all three, but also gives step free access.
Alight from bus or tram at Altinho (MAAT) and access the footbridge via Largo Marquês Angela. Once across the barrier, turn sharp right and down the slope, through the power station garden, and turn left at the end of the building. Access to the power station is on your left.
This building is also known as MAAT Central. It showcases the previous use of the structure as a power station - the machinery is still mostly intact - but with the bonus that there are spaces set aside for presenting artworks.
Once you’ve checked out MAAT Central, take the riverside path to the new building, which houses a series of temporary exhibitions. Make sure you keep your tickets, as these will be checked on entry.
In the warmer months, the terrace at the café is worth a visit if you need to sit and relax after your visit. It’s not cheap, but to an extent you’re paying for the view, out over the river, with a panorama including The Bridge and Cristo Rei.
Tram 15, Buses 714, 727 and 751 at Altinho (MAAT).
