3.2 Private Hire
TVDE
This is an abbreviation of Transporte em Veículo Descaracterizado a partir de plataforma Eletrónica, or in the real world, services like Bolt and Uber. Vehicles show a discreet TVDE sign at the corner of front and rear screens. This means they have a TVDE licence. No licence - DON’T GO THERE.
If public transport is not for you, because of group, family or mobility issues, you may want to use one of these services. You may be able to organise hire by the day for your group.
There do seem to be a lot of TVDEs driving around in anticipation of getting a ping. Bit like Uber in London - making the traffic jams worse.
Plus point: lots of TVDE vehicles are all-electric.
Minus point: the predominant electric vehicle type appears to be the Renault Zoë. So not the roomiest, especially in the back.
TukTuks
OK, we have to talk about TukTuks.
On the one hand, many of these vehicles are run by knowledgeable and experienced Lisboetas who have a wealth of local savvy.
On the other hand, many more of them are run by folks who have done little more than digested a guide book and have a bit of front about them.
You pays your money and you takes your chance.
Any softening in my dislike of TukTukers dissipates every time one of their number hassles me while walking across the Praça da Figueira, and there is usually a crowd of them in Praça da Figueira, looking for a booking. Or, more recently, tries to flatten me while using a pedestrian crossing near the Cathedral. I have observed some truly dreadful road behaviour from TukTuk drivers. That’s dreadful, even by Portuguese standards of driving.
All of that includes the faux vintage car brigade.
