2.2 Coach And Rail

Coach

Long distance coaches arrive at one of two termini: Sete Rios and Oriente.

Sete Rios is in Lisbon’s north west suburbs. It is close to Sete Rios rail station, which has services towards Sintra, and towards the south side locations of Pragal, Corroios, Coina, Pinhal Novo, and Setúbal.

It’s also close to Jardim Zoológico Metro (Blue Line). This gives access to central Lisbon locations, as well as further out into the suburbs.

See Section 3 for ticketing.

Oriente is in north-east Lisbon. It’s on the Metro Red Line, and next to Oriente rail station, which provides long distance services across Portugal, as well as suburban and Regional services towards the north, the Alentejo, and Algarve. Also suburban services towards Sintra and Azambuja.

And it’s still pronounced Orient, NOT Orient-AY.

At either terminal, if you are boarding an international service - there are regular services to, for instance, Madrid and Sevilla - you must show your passport or other form of acceptable photo ID when asked. The crew are responsible for making sure you are OK to enter Spain.

Rail

Rail services almost all terminate at Santa Apolónia (Location HERE), after calling at Oriente. This is a less hectic place to arrive; there are places to sit and chill, buses outside, and access to the Metro (blue line). The building used to be painted in a pale blue wash; now it’s a distinctive deep red, maybe because much of the inside has become an upmarket hotel.

Station Supermarkets

Food or drink for the journey? Peckish after arrival?

Santa Apolónia and Cais do Sodré (HERE) stations have a Pingo Doce supermarket in the building. The Santa Apolónia one (by Track 5) is less hectic.

Sete Rios (HERE) and Entrecampos (HERE) stations have a Lidl downstairs.
