1.2 All You Need Is Cash
If you carry a UK debit card, or A N Other Country equivalent, you’re good to go for more than 90% of food and drink outlets, as well as pre-paid public transport.
HOWEVER if you insist on paying the bus or tram driver for a ticket, you need cash. Also, some food and drink outlets are cash only.
Cash means Euro cash. Don’t expect to be able to use banknotes in Sterling, US Dollars or whatever (I have seen this attempted - unsuccessfully).
Your debit card should be good for getting cash from a hole in the wall machine. HOWEVER. My advice is always, and that’s ALWAYS, use a cash machine with the MB or Multibanco sign. In Portugal, the default name for a cash machine is a Multibanco.
Other cash machines tend to give far less favourable exchange rates.
ALSO you will be prompted to convert the amount in Euro to your local currency. DECLINE THIS. This means your bank or card provider does the conversion, which invariably means you get a better rate.
IF you use a credit card to withdraw cash, it will cost you more.
You will also need cash for tips - pay with card, tip with cash.
